Questions people ask

What does a restaurant’s food hygiene rating cover?

The inspector checks three things: how food is handled, prepared, cooked, cooled and stored; the state of the kitchen and building, including cleaning, ventilation and pest control; and how the business manages food safety and keeps its records. It doesn’t judge the taste, the service or the prices, so a small family place can score 5 and a smart one can score 2.

Which restaurants in Hey are rated 5 for hygiene?

28 of the 41 rated restaurants within 1 mile of the middle of Hey had a 5 at their last inspection. Among them: Lucky Fortune, Village Pizza and Lees Spice Lounge.

Can a restaurant with a low rating get a better one?

Yes. Once it has put things right it can ask the council to come back and re-rate it, sometimes for a fee, and it can appeal a rating it thinks is unfair. Until a new inspection the old rating stands, so check the date beside each one here.

Do restaurants have to display their hygiene rating?

Not in England: showing the sticker is up to the business, though most with a good score do. In Wales and Northern Ireland it’s the law. You can look any rating up on the Food Standards Agency’s website, or on each business’s page here.
