Before you book an electrician
- Some work has to be signed off. Electrical work in homes in England and Wales comes under Part P of the Building Regulations. Bigger jobs, such as a new circuit, a new consumer unit (fuse box) or work near a bath or shower, are “notifiable”.
- Use a registered electrician for those jobs. An electrician registered with a government-approved scheme, such as NICEIC, NAPIT, ELECSA or Stroma, can sign off their own work. Otherwise building control at the council has to be told before the work starts. Check an electrician on the Electrical Competent Person Register.
- Ask for the certificate. You should get an Electrical Installation Certificate for new circuits or a Minor Works Certificate for smaller jobs, and for notifiable work a Building Regulations compliance certificate, usually sent by the scheme. Keep them: you’ll want them when you sell.
- Get more than one quote. For anything bigger than a quick fix, ask two or three electricians for a written quote saying what’s included, and when they can start.
- Power cut? Ring 105. If the power is off in your street, 105 is the free national number for your local electricity network. If it’s only your home, check the trip switches in your fuse box first.

Questions people ask
Does an electrician have to be registered?
There’s no single licence for electricians. But notifiable work in a home, such as a new circuit or fuse box, has to be either done by an electrician registered with a government-approved competent person scheme, who can certify it themselves, or reported to building control. You can check registration on electricalcompetentperson.co.uk.
What electrical work needs Building Regulations sign-off?
In England the main ones are a new circuit, replacing a consumer unit (fuse box) and adding to or changing circuits near a bath or shower, or in a swimming pool or sauna. Adding a socket or light to an existing circuit elsewhere, or replacing a switch, usually doesn’t need it.
How often do landlords need an electrical check?
Private landlords in England must have the electrics inspected and tested by a qualified person at least every five years, and give tenants a copy of the report, called an EICR. The rules are on gov.uk.
How many electricians are there in Enfield?
We know of 38 electricians across Enfield, and 38 of them list a phone number. Plenty work on their own without a shop front, so there may be more.
