Before you book a roofer
- There’s no licence, so check memberships. Roofers don’t need a licence. Look for membership of a trade body such as the National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC), or TrustMark, the government-endorsed quality scheme, and check them on those websites rather than trusting a logo.
- A new roof may need Building Regulations approval. Replacing the covering on more than about a quarter of a roof normally does. A roofer registered with a competent person scheme, such as CompetentRoofer, can sign it off; otherwise building control at the council has to be told.
- Get written quotes. Ask two or three roofers to quote in writing for the same job, and check whether scaffolding, skips and clearing up are included.
- Don’t pay a lot up front. A small deposit can be fair for materials, but be wary of anyone wanting most of the money before the work is done.
- Be wary of cold callers. Trading Standards warn about people who knock and say your roof needs urgent work. Don’t agree anything on the doorstep; get it looked at by a roofer you’ve chosen.
- Listed building or conservation area? Check with the council before work starts, as changing the roof’s materials or look may need permission.

Questions people ask
Do roofers need a licence?
No. There’s no compulsory licence or register for roofers in the UK, so anyone can trade as one. Membership of a trade body such as the NFRC, or of TrustMark, means a firm has been vetted; check its membership on the body’s own website.
Does re-roofing need Building Regulations approval?
Usually, if you’re replacing the covering on more than 25% of the roof, because the roof then has to meet today’s insulation standards. Small repairs usually don’t. A roofer registered with a competent person scheme can certify the work; otherwise building control must be told.
Someone knocked and said my roof needs urgent work. What should I do?
Don’t agree to anything or pay on the doorstep. Get a roofer you’ve found yourself to look at it. If you do sign a contract at home, you usually have 14 days to cancel. You can report a doorstep trader to Trading Standards through the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 0808 223 1133.
