Before you book a plumber
- Gas work needs Gas Safe. Anyone working on a gas boiler, cooker or fire must be on the Gas Safe Register by law. Ask to see their Gas Safe ID card and check it on gassaferegister.co.uk.
- For water fittings, look for WaterSafe. New bathrooms, outside taps and water heaters have to meet the water regulations. WaterSafe lists plumbers approved to do that work and sign it off.
- Get more than one quote. For anything bigger than a quick fix, ask two or three plumbers for a written quote saying what’s included.
- Ask about call-out charges first. Check the call-out fee and hourly rate before anyone comes out, especially in the evening or at weekends.
- Know where your stopcock is. For a leak you can’t stop, turn the water off at the stopcock, often under the kitchen sink. If you smell gas, ring the gas emergency line on 0800 111 999.
Questions people ask
Does a plumber need to be Gas Safe registered?
Only for gas work. By law anyone fitting, fixing or servicing a gas boiler, cooker or fire must be on the Gas Safe Register. Plumbing that only involves water, like taps, toilets and pipes, doesn’t need it.
How do I check a plumber is Gas Safe registered?
Ask to see their Gas Safe ID card, which has their licence number, photo and the kinds of gas work they’re qualified for. You can check the number, or find a registered engineer, on gassaferegister.co.uk.
What is WaterSafe?
WaterSafe is the national register of plumbers approved to install water fittings to the water regulations. An approved plumber can certify their work, which helps if the water company ever inspects it.
