Choosing a nursery

Read the latest inspection. Search for the nursery on Care Inspectorate Wales; funded places are inspected by Estyn too.
Visit, and ask about the day. Ratios of staff to children, how they settle a new child in, food, naps and time outdoors.
Ask about funded hours and extra charges. Some nurseries charge for meals, nappies or trips on top of funded hours.
Check waiting lists early. Popular nurseries fill months ahead, especially for babies.

Questions people ask

Who inspects nurseries in Wales?

Care Inspectorate Wales registers and inspects childcare, including nurseries and childminders, and Estyn inspects funded nursery education. Ofsted only covers England.

Can I get free childcare in Wales?

Wales has its own schemes, separate from England’s, such as the Childcare Offer for Wales for many working parents of three and four year olds. The Welsh Government’s website, gov.wales, has the details and how to apply.

How do I check a nursery’s inspection?

Search for it by name or postcode on careinspectorate.wales. Each report says how well the nursery cares for children and how it is run.

How many nurseries are there in Gwynedd?

We know of 16 nurseries, preschools and childcare providers across Gwynedd. Childminders working from home don’t always appear on maps, so there may be more.
