Before you book an electrician
- Some work has to be signed off. Electrical work in homes in England and Wales comes under Part P of the Building Regulations. Bigger jobs, such as a new circuit, a new consumer unit (fuse box) or work near a bath or shower, are “notifiable”, and in Wales a few more jobs are too.
- Use a registered electrician for those jobs. An electrician registered with a government-approved scheme, such as NICEIC, NAPIT, ELECSA or Stroma, can sign off their own work. Otherwise building control at the council has to be told before the work starts. Check an electrician on the Electrical Competent Person Register.
- Ask for the certificate. You should get an Electrical Installation Certificate for new circuits or a Minor Works Certificate for smaller jobs, and for notifiable work a Building Regulations compliance certificate, usually sent by the scheme. Keep them: you’ll want them when you sell.
- Get more than one quote. For anything bigger than a quick fix, ask two or three electricians for a written quote saying what’s included, and when they can start.
- Power cut? Ring 105. If the power is off in your street, 105 is the free national number for your local electricity network. If it’s only your home, check the trip switches in your fuse box first.

Questions people ask
Does an electrician have to be registered?
There’s no single licence for electricians. But notifiable work in a home, such as a new circuit or fuse box, has to be either done by an electrician registered with a government-approved competent person scheme, who can certify it themselves, or reported to building control. You can check registration on electricalcompetentperson.co.uk.
What electrical work needs Building Regulations sign-off?
In Wales the rules cover a little more than in England. New circuits, a new consumer unit (fuse box) and work near a bath or shower are notifiable, and so is more work in kitchens and outdoors. Your council’s building control team can say whether a job needs it.
How often do landlords need an electrical check?
In Wales landlords must have the electrics checked by a qualified person at least every five years, under the Renting Homes rules, and give tenants the report. England has similar rules for private landlords.
