Questions people ask

Do coffee shops get food hygiene ratings?

Yes. A café or coffee shop is a food business, so the council inspects it and rates it from 0 to 5 like any restaurant. The very lowest-risk places, selling only drinks and packaged snacks, may be marked exempt instead.

Which cafés in Shortstown have the top hygiene rating?

73 of the 95 rated cafés within 3 miles of the middle of Shortstown scored 5, “very good”, when they were last inspected. They include The Hangar Cafe & Bar, Fuji Film and Baxter Storey at Autoglass.

What does “awaiting inspection” mean?

A new food business has to register with the council at least 28 days before it opens, and is rated at its first inspection, which can be some weeks after opening. Until then the register shows it as awaiting inspection. 3 of the cafés within 3 miles of the middle of Shortstown are in that position.

Where do I find a café’s rating?

Many cafés put the sticker in the window or by the till, but in England they don’t have to. Every rating is on the Food Standards Agency’s website, and on each café’s page here.
